TMJ & Sleep Apnea Treatment in Surrey

Jaw pain, morning headaches, clicking joints, grinding and snoring often share the same root: an overworked jaw and a restricted airway. Our dentists treat both, starting with the muscles and the bite so relief lasts.

Understanding the connection

Your Jaw, Your Muscles and Your Sleep Are Connected

The temporomandibular joints let you chew, speak and yawn. When the surrounding muscles are strained by clenching, grinding or a misaligned bite, you may develop TMJ disorder (TMD): jaw pain, headaches, ear pressure and stiffness.

Grinding at night is also a common sign of a restricted airway. Many patients with TMJ symptoms also snore or have undiagnosed sleep apnea. Treating the jaw, the muscles and the airway together is how we get you comfortable and sleeping well.

Which one is it?

TMJ Disorder or Sleep Apnea? Often Both.

Two checklists. If several items sound familiar, an evaluation with our dentists is the right next step.

Why We Treat the Jaw First

TMJ treatment and Emface are the first step of a process that ends in a healthier, more balanced smile.

1Step 1

Jaw & Muscle Balance

Grinding, clenching and TMJ strain overwork the jaw and facial muscles. TMJ treatment, a custom night guard and Emface muscle therapy calm that foundation first.

2Step 2

Teeth Alignment

With the jaw settled, Invisalign moves the teeth into a balanced, functional bite. Straight teeth on a relaxed jaw stay comfortable and stable.

Surface Aesthetics

Only then do we refine the surface: whitening, veneers, bonding, dermal fillers and collagen therapies. Natural-looking results that age well because the foundation is sound.

Facial Aesthetics

One recent patient started with a night guard for grinding, then TMJ treatment, then Emface for the muscles of the cheeks, jaw and forehead. Only once the foundation was calm did we begin aligning her teeth. That order is what made her result last.

Sleep apnea & snoring

Oral Appliance Therapy for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

For many patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, a custom-fitted oral appliance is a comfortable alternative to CPAP. Worn at night, it gently holds the lower jaw forward to keep the airway open.

We screen for airway concerns as part of your dental exam, use 3D CBCT imaging to assess the airway when needed, and coordinate with your physician or a sleep clinic for a formal sleep study before treatment.

Your treatment options

TMJ Treatment Options

Recommendations depend on the severity of your symptoms and the underlying cause. Most plans combine two or more.

Custom Night Guards

Custom oral appliances reduce grinding and relieve pressure on the jaw joints while you sleep.

Emface Muscle Therapy

Non-invasive radiofrequency and HIFES energy relax and re-balance overworked jaw and facial muscles.

Bite Evaluation

3D imaging and a detailed bite analysis identify imbalances that strain the joints.

Habit Modification

Practical strategies to reduce clenching, muscle tension and other contributing factors.

Stress Management

Because stress often drives jaw tension, relaxation techniques may be part of your plan.

Restorative or Orthodontic Care

Rebuilding worn teeth or aligning the bite with Invisalign for long-term stability.

Good to know

TMJ & Sleep Apnea Questions

What causes TMJ disorders?
TMJ disorders can result from teeth grinding, jaw clenching, stress, bite misalignment, arthritis, trauma or muscle strain. Often several factors combine.
Can a dentist treat sleep apnea?
Dentists trained in dental sleep medicine can provide custom oral appliance therapy for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Diagnosis comes from a sleep study ordered by your physician, and we work together on your treatment.
Will a night guard help my TMJ symptoms?
Many patients experience relief with a custom night guard because it reduces pressure on the jaw joints and minimizes nighttime grinding. It is usually the first step in a TMJ plan.
How does Emface fit into TMJ treatment?
Emface tones and re-balances the muscles of the face and jaw without needles or downtime. For patients with chronic clenching, calmer muscles mean less joint strain, fewer headaches and a better foundation for any cosmetic or orthodontic work that follows.
When should I seek treatment?
Book an evaluation if you have persistent jaw pain, morning headaches, clicking or locking, worn teeth, loud snoring or unrefreshing sleep.
